About Red Bull
Soapbox Race

Red Bull Soapbox Race is a global event for amateur drivers racing homemade soapbox crafts. Each hand-made machine is fueled by creativity and competitive fun - not to mention the need for speed. This unique non-motorized racing event challenges both experienced racers and amateurs alike to design and build outrageous, human-powered soapbox dream machines and compete against the clock in a downhill race.

Red Bull has held more than 100 soapbox races around the world since the first one in Brussels in the year 2000 – from Australia to South Africa, Helsinki to St. Louis, Jamaica to Italy.

Cincinnati's most innovative and witty teams will race each other down the twists and turns of Cincinnati’s Eden Park on the 8th of September.

Applications for the Red Bull Soapbox Race in Cincinnati open Monday March 12th 2018 and close Friday June 1st 2018.

To submit an entry, you must:

  • Successfully complete the soapbox game on this website

Or

  • Call the hotline number at 1-845-681-3478

Your team may have no more than 5 participants including your brave driver who must be at least 18 years old. We’re not opposed to younger drivers, but lawyers are.

The best 60 valid entries will be chosen to build their Soapbox and compete in Cincinnati.

It’s not enough that it actually moves. What we’re looking for is the outrageous, the preposterous and the ostentatious! A soapbox should be an extension of its team. It’s wild. It’s crazy. It can be anything they want. It just can’t be ordinary.

In order to be accepted, your human-powered racing machine must:

Not exceed a maximum of 6 feet wide and 12 feet long.

Be no taller than 7 feet and must be at least 7 inches from the ground.

It must not exceed 176 pounds in weight (excluding the driver, of course).

Soapboxes must be powered by the force of gravity only. That, and your imagination. So no stored power or external energy sources are allowed. But that doesn’t mean you won’t go fast.

So, fully functioning brakes and steering are required.

Modified prefabricated cars, kit-cars and vehicles such as bulldozers, steamrollers, and tricked-out minis are also not allowed.

In case your soapbox doesn’t end up in the local design museum, please select building materials carefully to ensure that your machine doesn’t impact too harshly on the environment.

For any other questions or inquiries please reach out to soapboxcincy@redbull.com

Not to state the obvious, but this event is, first and foremost, a race. Therefore, the fastest one across the finish line is definitely going to be looked upon favorably. Take note though, that one actually has to cross the finish line in the vehicle.

That said, when it comes to the Red Bull Soapbox Race, speed is nothing without a little personality. Teams are judged on three criteria: Design, Race performance and Showmanship. So racers need to wow us with their stage routine, impress us with their soapbox design, and, of course, dazzle us with their showmanship.

Drivers are not permitted to be physically attached to their vehicle or enclosed in any kind of capsule or cockpit that they cannot easily escape from.

All performance costumes must not pose the risk of getting caught in the car or obstruct the driver’s ability to see.

Every driver is permitted a co-driver if desired.

The pit crew is 4 people max and you’ll need all of them to get a good push. Pit crew can only push as far as the start line. After that, the driver is on their own!

FAQ

What is Red Bull Soapbox Race?

Red Bull Soapbox Race is an international event in which amateur drivers race homemade soapbox vehicles. Each hand-made machine is fueled by nothing but sheer courage, the force of gravity and perhaps a little Red Bull. This unique, non-motorized racing event challenges both experienced racers and amateurs alike to design and build outrageous soapbox dream machines and compete against the clock in a downhill race.

When is the event?

September 8th, 2018 at 950 Eden Park Drive, Cincinnati, OH.

11am – 4pm.

Free and open to all. Concessions on site.

Who is usually involved?

Red Bull Soapbox gives both experienced racers and amateurs alike a chance to tap into their inner youth to design and build the most outrageous vehicle with one goal in mind, to make it down the course the fastest and with their creation in one piece.

So grab a team of five, pick a theme and get racing!

How are teams judged?

In order to be crowned king or queen of the hill you’ll need more than just skill, teams will be judged on a criteria of one-third speed, one-third creativity and one-third showmanship. In the end, it comes down to not only building the quickest soapbox, but also impressing the judges by how outrageous and charismatic they can be.

How can I apply to be a part of it?

Applications call for teams of athletes, designers, engineers, entertainers, and everyone in-between to turn their racing dreams into reality. For a chance to compete at the third Red Bull Soapbox in Cincinnati this Fall, request application information by calling the hotline, playing the game located in the application section of this website.

The deadline to submit craft designs is June 1, 2018.

What do the crafts typically look like?

Last time Soapbox hit Cincy we saw crafts resembling big pigs, double decker buses, macaroni and cheese, and yes, even space sharks. Thousands will gather to witness these wacky contraptions compete downhill against their biggest opponent… gravity. What crafty creations will we see come out of the Midwest this year?

When do teams get announced?

Deadline for applications is June 1st and teams will be notified by June 8th.
